5 Ways To Make Your AC Dollars Go Further
By Kurt Real Estate Nov 23, 2019
With summer upon us, it’s time to prepare ourselves for the inevitable heat waves of Southern California. If you have AC in your home, then you know that electric bill can be quite the buzz kill from now until October. Not to mention, overusing the AC can burn out your unit quicker and the need for repair/replacement is at an all time high during these summer months. Before changing any summer vacation plans to account for exorbitant utilities bills, here are 5 ways to cut down on your electric bill while staying cool this summer.
1. Change your filter when it’s dirty. This may sound like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people simply don’t do this. Managing 60 properties throughout OC and selling 30+ homes a year, we’ve seen it all. Believe us when we say more often than not, people just don’t do it. Whether they don’t know to change it or they’re too lazy to, this is a common item that comes up on a home inspection. Changing your filter regularly keeps your AC unit operating efficiently and effectively saving you money on your electric bill and on repairs.
2. Clean your condenser. All too often that outdoor unit is neglected and this affects efficiency. When the fins get clogged with dirt and vegetation begins to grow around the unit, this wears on your unit. Remove any trash or vegetation clinging to your unit (of course turn off your unit before sticking your arm in it). Take your garden hose and spray down the condenser until the water running off of it is clear.
3. Shade your unit. Like anything, the heat of the sun and direct exposure can slow it down and burn it out quicker. The less heat being carried by your unit, the easier it is to expel heat from your home. Blocking direct sunlight can make a HUGE difference.
4. Install ceiling fans. According to the US Department of Energy, using properly sized ceiling fans with your AC running can make 78 degrees feel like 74. Keeping your AC on 4 degrees warmer can add up to some serious cash. While ceiling fans don’t actually change the temperature in the room, the wind chill effect makes us feel cooler.
5. Hang heavy drapes. Insulating large windows during the summer will also make a considerable difference. The easiest way to do this is with heavy drapes. Keeping drapes closed during the hottest part of the day will prevent the heat from radiating into the rest of the house. Low-E film is another way to help windows stay cool.
