7 Moving Tips That Will Make Your Life A Lot Easier
By Kurt Real Estate Nov 23, 2019
While the thought of moving into a new house can be incredibly exciting, you may experience a bit of a buzzkill at what that actually entails – having to pack up all of your belongings into boxes, load them into a truck or van, drive them over to your new home, unload them, and unpack.
It can be an incredibly daunting task.
Fortunately, there are seven steps you can take to make your move as efficient and stress-free as possible.
1. Do One Room At A Time
First of all, pack one room at a time. Nothing is more stressful than trying to pack up your whole house at once.
2. Set Benchmarks Of Dates For Rooms To Be Packed Up
Setting benchmarks of when to have certain rooms packed up is very important. It will help keep you on schedule and
Four Categories – Sell, Toss, Donate, or Keep
My wife and I recently converted our second bedroom into a nursery, and we needed to clear out an old bookshelf, two computer desks, and a closet. It was no small task. But we decided that everything we owned in that room was “fired”, meaning it had to earn it’s way back into our house.
We donated, sold, or threw away most of the items in that room, only keeping the things that were absolutely necessary and relocated them. Moving is a great time to clean house, so don’t be stingy with what you decide to donate, toss, or sell.
4. Pickup Free Boxes From Local Stores Or Facebook Groups
Free boxes are everywhere, if you know where to look for them. Check your local liquor store, grocery store, office supply store, and even put out the call to a local neighborhood group on Facebook to see if anyone has any leftover boxes from a recent move of their own.
5. Pack Early, Even If You Still Have To Sell Your Home
You’re going to have to pack eventually, so start as early as you can. A little bit of packing here and there beats a ton of packing all at once.
Pack all the non-essentials, such as books, keepsakes, or everything you can do without for at least a couple months.
6. Label Every Side Of Your Boxes
Chances are, you’ll be stacking quite a few boxes during the move, and you’ll want to be able to easily see what items are in what boxes. Be sure to label EVERY side of all your boxes to make unpacking as easy as possible.
7. Take Pictures Of Electronics Before You Unplug Them
Nothing is more frustrating than forgetting how all your electronic equipment was plugged in before you had to move everything.
If you have an especially complicated setup, or you just don’t want to bother with trying to remember, snapping some pictures of how your devices were plugged in can be a lifesaver.
8. Stop Buying Groceries A Week Or Two Before Your Move Date
The goal is to have little to no leftover food before you move. Depending on your needs, you may want to stop buying groceries all together a few weeks before you move, peppering in some dinners out here and there to hold you over until the big moving day.
