Downsizing The Right Way

Thinking of downsizing? No, we’re not talking about the new Matt Damon movie. With many boomers now empty nesters, they no longer have a need for so much home. People downsize for a number of reasons. Whether they’re looking to cut down on their monthly nut, they have a desire to move coastal, or they’ve had some life-changing occurrence , the thought of downsizing can be a little intimidating. Here are a few tips on downsizing the right way.
1. Start early. Giving yourself ample time to make the transition will relieve a lot of that stress. Jumping into something when you’re not prepared can be overwhelming. Plan to give yourself three months to downsize (sort through your possessions and purge).
2. Take inventory. It can be difficult, but assess your possessions and only keeping the things you need. Learn different methods of organization here.
3. Make a plan. Decide what you will do with the items you plan to get rid of. Will you be donating them? Giving them to family? Having an estate sale? Selling them online? Start the process with a plan. It will help you to stay organized and quickly rid of the things you no longer need. Measuring items that will stay is of equal importance so you can make sure everything will fit in your new place.
4. Be creative. Creativity is key when downsizing. Learn organizational and decorative tricks. Mirrors make a space feel larger. Tall bookcases can be used to display art and for storage.
